Genome Medicine is calling for submissions to a new Collection on how artificial intelligence in oncology has increased dramatically in recent years, evolving from basic algorithm development research toward incorporation into clinical application, guest edited by Dr Jakob Nikolas Kather from Technical University Dresden and Dr Mihaela Aldea from Gustave Roussy.

About the Collection

Genome Medicine is pleased to present, “AI applications in cancer discovery and care.” The use of AI in oncology has increased dramatically in recent years, evolving from basic algorithm development research towards incorporation into clinical application. Simultaneous advances in genome sequencing technology and computing have allowed for AI usage on high dimensionality cancer datasets for risk prediction, detection, diagnosis, molecular characterization, subtype classification, precision medicine, and therapeutic target identification. Of particular interest is how these advances are now being integrated into clinical practice to benefit patient care.

To capture advances in this growing area, Genome Medicine is pleased to announce a call for papers for our upcoming special Collection on “AI applications in cancer discovery and care,” guest edited by Dr Jakob Nikolas Kather from Technical University Dresden and Dr Mihaela Aldea from Gustave Roussy. We are particularly interested in encouraging collaboration between basic and clinical researchers. The Guest Editors may be able to provide guidance on fostering such collaborations; please contact the editorial team to discuss further.

We are now inviting the submission of Research, Method, Software, Database, and Guideline manuscripts of outstanding interest describing AI applications for cancer discovery and care including:

  • Machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, interpretable AI
  • Multimodal artificial intelligence systems
  • Artificial intelligence agents 
  • Single-cell analyses, methods, and tools using machine learning
  • Spatial transcriptomics and landscapes
  • Histopathology and multi-omics
  • Mapping spatiotemporal trajectories and cell-cell interactions
  • Cancer interactomes
  • Multi-modal data fusion with AI for biomarker discovery
  • Clonal dynamics, subclonal selection, and metastasis evolution and tracking
  • Prediction of cancer risk, prognosis, and therapy response
  • Cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Immune system dynamics during cancer treatment

Meet the Guest Editors

Jakob Nikolas Kather, MD, MSc, Technical University Dresden, Germany

Professor Jakob Kather holds dual appointments in medicine and computer science at the Technical University (TU) Dresden, Germany, serves as a senior physician in medical oncology at the University Hospital Dresden and holds an additional affiliation with the National Center for Tumor Diseases in Heidelberg. His research is focused on applying artificial intelligence in precision oncology. Professor Kather’s research team at TU Dresden is using deep learning techniques to analyze a spectrum of clinical data, including histopathology, radiology images, textual records, and multimodal datasets. Guided by the belief that medical and tech expertise needs to be combined, medical researchers in his team learn computer programming and data analysis, while computer scientists are immersed in cancer biology and oncology.

Mihaela Aldea, MD PhD, Gustave Roussy, France

Mihaela Aldea, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor at Paris Saclay University and a medical oncologist at Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France. She is actively involved in translational research, clinical practice, and education. Her research interests include topics on precision medicine, liquid biopsy, and cancer resistance. Dr Aldea leads the RET MAP global registry dedicated to RET+ lung cancer. She is a recipient of the L’Oréal UNESCO For Women in Science Award and the IASLC Young Investigator Award.

This Collection welcomes submission of original Research, Method, Software, Database and Guideline manuscripts. Should you wish to submit a different article type, please read our submission guidelines to confirm that type is accepted by the journal. Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Snapp. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection, please select "AI applications in cancer discovery and care" from the dropdown menu.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
