BMC Emergency Medicine is calling for submissions to our Collection, Closed head injuries. This Collection seeks to gather cutting-edge research on closed head injuries, encompassing the spectrum of nonpenetrating traumatic brain injuries encountered in emergency medicine. We invite submissions that explore the pathophysiology, clinical assessment, imaging modalities, diagnostic and prognostic values of blood-based biomarkers, and management strategies for closed head injuries, with the goal of advancing emergency care practices and improving patient outcomes.

Endre Czeiter, MD, PhD, University of Pécs, Hungary

Dr Endre Czeiter is a senior research fellow at the University of Pécs, specializing in traumatic brain injury (TBI). His research focuses on protein biomarkers in both clinical and small animal TBI model settings, aiming to enhance diagnostic and prognostic tools for TBI. Recently, he participated in a large-scale international study known as the ‘Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI)’ as part of the work group focused on developing a serum biobank as well as investigating serum neurobiomarkers in TBI. His research interests also include the neuropathological consequences of TBI, particularly diffuse axonal injury, and exploring neuroprotective strategies to mitigate these effects.

Arian Zaboli, RN, MSN, Innovation, Research and Teaching Service (SABES-ASDAA), Teaching Hospital of the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU), Italy

Arian Zaboli is a nurse who worked for several years in the emergency department at Merano Hospital in Italy and is currently responsible for non-medical clinical research for the South Tyrolean Health Service, overseeing clinical studies across seven hospitals in the province. He has led over 70 studies in emergency medicine and nursing, focusing on topics such as triage and mild traumatic brain injury in anticoagulated patients. His recent research on mild traumatic brain injury emphasizes the predictive risk factors for intracranial hemorrhage in patients on DOAC therapy.

About the Collection

BMC Emergency Medicine is calling for submissions to our collection, Closed head injuries.
 
Closed head injuries, including concussions, contusions, and diffuse axonal injuries, present significant challenges in emergency medicine. These injuries can result from non-penetrating trauma and may lead to intracranial hematomas, increased intracranial pressure, and other life-threatening complications. Understanding the mechanisms, clinical presentation, and management of closed head injuries is crucial for improving patient outcomes and optimizing emergency care.

Advancing our collective understanding of closed head injuries is essential for enhancing diagnostic and treatment approaches in emergency medicine. Recent advances have highlighted the importance of early recognition of intracranial injuries, the use of advanced imaging techniques such as CT scans, and the application of standardized assessment tools like the Glasgow Coma Scale. Additionally, research has emphasized the significance of individualized management strategies tailored to the specific type and severity of closed head injuries.

Continued research in this area holds the potential for further advancements in the development of novel diagnostic tools, such as biomarkers for identifying intracranial injuries, and the refinement of treatment protocols to minimize secondary brain injury and improve long-term neurological outcomes. Furthermore, ongoing research efforts may lead to the identification of predictive models for intracranial complications, facilitating more precise risk stratification and personalized management strategies for patients with closed head injuries.
