Call for papers - Medical Modeling and Simulation

Guest Editor

Philippe J. Giabbanelli, PhD, Old Dominion University, USA

Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 7 May 2025

BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making is calling for submissions to our Collection on Medical Modeling and Simulation.

This collection welcomes submissions in which Modeling and Simulation (M&S) provide the methodological cornerstone, using computational techniques, including agent-based models and system dynamics, or conceptual modeling approaches, including cognitive maps. While physiological or public health models are also of interest, we emphasize that submissions should directly relate to understanding or improving medical outcomes through M&S (by improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, or personalizing medical decision-making). Manuscripts with direct medical applications from the perspectives of patients or medical professionals are particularly encouraged.

Dr Philippe J. Giabbanelli is a full-time research professor at Old Dominion University and the director of medical Modeling and Simulation at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC). His research focuses on developing and applying AI and simulation to support population health interventions. He has published four books and authored over 130 articles, whose quality has been recognized in several ways, including five best paper awards and nominations. He is actively involved in scientific leadership as editor for multiple journals, lead editor of several special issues, or track, program, or general chair at international ACM or IEEE conferences.

About the Collection

BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making is calling for submissions to our Collection on Medical Modeling and Simulation.

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) can support medical decision-making activities at all levels and scopes, encompassing a wide range of topics from the identification of potential population-level prevention initiatives to individual-level treatment protocols. Decision support tools are routinely employed by medical practitioners and healthcare professionals, for example, to manage resource allocation.

This collection welcomes submissions in which M&S provide the methodological cornerstone, using computational techniques, including agent-based models and system dynamics, or conceptual modeling approaches, including cognitive maps.

This Collection welcomes submission of original Research Articles. Should you wish to submit a different article type, please read our submission guidelines to confirm that type is accepted by the journal. Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Snapp. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection, please select ''Medical Modeling and Simulation'' from the dropdown menu.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard  peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
