International Journal of Emergency Medicine is calling for submissions to our Collection on Enhancing Emergency Care for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) comprises up to 85% of all TBIs and results in significant morbidity. Unfortunately, the sequelae from mTBI in the emergency department setting are often underrecognized, as there may be no external sign of injury. This collection invites papers that examine the emergency department evaluation of mTBI in adults and children.

About the Collection

International Journal of Emergency Medicine is calling for submissions to our Collection on Enhancing Emergency Care for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) comprises up to 85% of all TBIs and results in significant morbidity. Unfortunately, the sequelae from mTBI in the emergency department setting are often underrecognized, as there may be no external sign of injury. This can lead to abbreviated workups, such as a lack of imaging or referrals. Even when imaging is done, it may initially be “negative,” effectively terminating further investigation.

Furthermore, although mTBI is typically defined as a Glasgow Coma Score of 13-15, studies demonstrate that there is wide variability within this range. This collection invites papers that examine the emergency department evaluation of mTBI in adults and children. The focus can range from oculomotor deficits, neurocognitive testing, injury prevention and public health, descriptions of multidisciplinary care of mTBI, or any topic that shines a light on this condition that impacts more than 55.9 million people worldwide every year.
