Novelties of the Measurement of Vascular Biomarkers in the Clinical Practice

Artery Research is calling for submissions to our Collection on novel methods and devices in the measurement of vascular biomarkers in clinical practice. Cardiovascular (CV) diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in numerous countries worldwide. Vascular biomarkers of arterial stiffening evaluated with different devices are increasingly recognized as independent predictors of CV mortality. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the most accepted non-invasive arterial stiffness parameter and in Europe among hypertensive patients it is a recommended method for the evaluation of hypertension-mediated organ damage. Besides non-invasive measurements, different formulas are also available for PWV estimation. Other vascular biomarkers, like central systolic blood pressure, central pulse pressure or augmentation index are also promising biomarkers and, in the future, might be part of therapy guidance.  

The purpose of this special issue is to publish high-quality research papers as well as review articles addressing recent advances in the measurement and clinical application of arterial stiffness and central hemodynamic parameters.

János Nemcsik, MD, PhD, Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary

János Nemcsik was born in 08/02/1977, in Eger, Hungary. He graduated in medicine in 2001 and was awarded of Ph.D. degree in 2005, both in Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. He is a specialist of internal medicine, family medicine, occupational medicine and hypertension care. He currently works as a general practitioner, he is also associate professor at the Department of Family Medicine, Semmelweis University. Since September 2017, he is the secretary general of the Hungarian Society of Hypertension and he is member of the Executive Committee of Artery Society since 2021. He is also member of the General Practitioner Nucleus of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) since 2023 and member of the Working Group on Large Arteries of ESH since 2022. He is involved in endothelial dysfunction, hypertension, vascular ageing and arterial stiffness research and he is also interested in psychosomatic connections. Three of his PhD students have already been graduated. Publications (without abstracts): 105, impact factors: 161.302, citations: 1499, independent citations: 1089, Hirsch index: 21.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to: 

  • Clinical implication of new technologies or models for arterial stiffness and central blood pressure measurement 
  • Validation studies of new devices 
  • Follow-up data to obtain the predictive value of different vascular biomarkers
  • Interventional tools to decrease arterial stiffening and central blood pressure 
  • 24-hour arterial stiffness and central blood pressure monitoring data 
  • New results with estimated pulse wave velocity and possible clinical applications.
