Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 16 June 2025

BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology is calling for submissions to our Collection on Reproductive toxicology. Research in this field is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of reproductive toxicity, identifying potential risks, and developing strategies for prevention and intervention. This Collection aims to highlight recent advancements and emerging trends in reproductive toxicology. We seek to gather high-quality research articles that provide comprehensive insights into assessing toxicant effects on reproductive health, fertility, and developmental outcomes.

Dr Roland Akhigbe is a clinician scientist with core interest in Reproductive Medicine. He has worked on the reproductive toxicity of environmental toxicants and substances of abuse. Roland was ranked one of the leading Research Experts in Africa and the number one in Nigeria by ExpertScape Global Ranking in 2023. Same year, he was ranked one of the top 2% global scientist by Stanford/Elsevier. He is the founder and Director of Reproductive Biology and Toxicology Research Laboratory (ReBTReL), a global initiative that mentors young scientists. He has published about 120 papers in reputable scholarly journals. His works have attracted 2800+ citations (Google scholar) with an h-index of 31 and i10-index of 71.

Shao-Chen Sun, PhD, Nanjing Agricultural University, China

Prof Shao-Chen Sun got his PhD degree from Chungbuk National University, Korea and currently is a professor at the College of Animal Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, China. His research interests are the environmental toxicity on mammalian oocyte maturation and embryo development, and the related molecular mechanism. Prof Sun published more than 160 papers in reputable scholarly journals and currently he acts as editor of Front Cell Dev Biol, PeerJ, and Genes.

About the Collection

BMC Pharmacology and Toxicology is calling for submissions to our Collection on Reproductive toxicology.

Reproductive toxicology encompasses the study of chemicals and pharmaceuticals that adversely affect reproductive health, including reproductive systems (e.g organs and hormone generating glands) and fertility, and development of the next generation. This reproductive hazard research is more critical, especially at the era with rising concerns about infertility, reproductive deficiency, congenital disabilities, and developmental disorders. The benefits of such research include advancing our understanding of the mechanisms underlying reproductive hazards, identifying potential risks, and developing appropriate strategies for risk prevention and intervention.

This Collection aims to highlight recent advancements and emerging trends in reproductive toxicology. We seek to gather high-quality research articles that provide comprehensive insights into assessing toxicant effects on reproductive health and offspring development that include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel assays and models to assess potential effects of hazards  on reproductive organs and function, hormone glands, and teratogenicity
  • Identify and assess time windows, dose response and long term effects of reproductive toxicants
  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of reproductive toxicants
  • Identify mechanisms/pathways of reproductive toxicants at the molecular and cellular levels, including endocrine disruption
  • Develop and validate novel methodologies and models for assessing reproductive toxicity

This Collection welcomes submission of original Research Articles. Should you wish to submit a different article type, please read our submission guidelines to confirm that type is accepted by the journal. Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Snapp. During the submission process you will be asked whether you are submitting to a Collection, please select "Reproductive toxicology" from the dropdown menu.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all of the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
