Matias Kirst, PhD, University of Florida, USA

Dr Matias Kirst is a Distinguished Professor of Quantitative Genetics and Genomics. His research investigates the genetic regulation of extraordinary plant innovations to enhance agricultural resilience to climate change, bioenergy production, and the phytomining of energy transition minerals using plant-based and synthetic biology approaches. Discovery of novel trait regulators is guided by the cellular dissection of their development, leaning heavily in single-cell genomics methods. Kirst is also an Entrepreneur in Residence and startup founder, actively mentoring and developing training opportunities for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in entrepreneurship to foster the development of new, science-based ventures.

About the Collection

Genome Biology is calling for submissions to our Collection on single-cell and spatial-omics technologies in plants.

These technologies enable the comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of gene expression at the single-cell level, and the spatial organization of cells within tissues, spatial distribution of metabolites. This provides unprecedented insights into developmental processes, environmental responses, and interactions within the plant microenvironment, laying the foundation for targeted manipulation and improvement of crop traits.

With this Collection, we aim to present the recent technological advancements in single-cell and spatial-omics and their applications in understanding plant development and stress biology.
