Call for papers - Sleep disorders in older adults

Guest Editors

Kiran Kumar Guruswamy Ravindran, PhD, University of Surrey, UK
Junxin Li, PhD, RN, Johns Hopkins University, USA

Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 23 April 2025

BMC Geriatrics is inviting submissions to our Collection on Sleep disorders in older adults.

This Collection aims to enhance our understanding of sleep disorders and develop evidence-based strategies for their diagnosis, treatment, and management.
Sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders, are thought to increase with aging, becoming a highly prevalent issue amongst older adults. Sleep disorders and disturbances can severely impact overall health and quality of life, increasing the risk of falls, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and other adverse health outcomes. Despite their prevalence and impact, these conditions in older adults are often underdiagnosed and undertreated.

New Content ItemThis Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.

Kiran Kumar Guruswamy Ravindran, PhD, University of Surrey, UK

Kiran Kumar Guruswamy Ravindran is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, University of Surrey, and UK DRI Care Research & Technology Centre at Imperial College London and University of Surrey, Guildford. His current research primarily revolves around understanding the influence of comorbidities on sleep physiology and evaluation of consumer sleep technologies (CST) for monitoring sleep in healthy older adults and people living with dementia (PLWD). Through his work, Kiran Kumar Guruswamy Ravindran hopes to create scalable solutions to real-world problems that currently hinder round-the-clock monitoring of sleep and circadian function.

Junxin Li, PhD, RN, Johns Hopkins University, USA

Junxin Li works to promote health and well-being of older adults, particularly by understanding how physical activity and sleep affect cognitive function. Research interests include the associations between daytime activities, sleep, and cognitive function; the biological mechanisms for these associations; the short- and long-term impacts of daytime napping on cognitive functions; and testing individually tailored interventions implementing mHealth technology to promote healthy aging.

About the Collection

BMC Geriatrics is inviting submissions to our Collection on Sleep disorders in older adults.

Sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders, are thought to increase with aging; becoming a highly prevalent issue amongst older adults.  Sleep disorders and disturbances can severely impact overall health and quality of life, increasing the risk of falls, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and other adverse health outcomes. Despite their prevalence and impact, these conditions in older adults are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. This Collection aims to explore various aspects of sleep disorders in older populations covering topics such as:

  • Clinical implications, including effects on cognitive function, cardiovascular health, and overall quality of life
  • Potential links between sleep disorders and physical and mental health
  • Evidence-based treatment and management strategies, such as pharmacological interventions, behavioral therapies, and lifestyle modifications
  • Health disparities in the prevalence, diagnosis, and management of sleep disorders among older adults from different socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, and geographic regions
  • Environmental factors associated with sleep disorders

This Collection aims to enhance our understanding of sleep disorders and develop evidence-based strategies for their diagnosis, treatment, and management.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.
