Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 26 May 2025

BMC Infectious Diseases is welcoming submissions to our Collection on Urinary tract infections (UTIs), dedicated to advancing our understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of UTIs. We invite studies focused on the epidemiology and prevention of UTIs, emphasizing strategies to reduce their incidence in both community and healthcare settings. By sharing the recent research and fostering collaboration, this Collection seeks to promote innovative solutions to combat UTIs and enhance patient outcomes worldwide.

Nicole J. De Nisco, PhD, The University of Texas at Dallas, USA

Dr Nicole J. De Nisco is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. The De Nisco Lab investigates host-pathogen-microbiome interactions underlying recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI) susceptibility in women. A current major focus of the De Nisco Lab is defining the metabolic relationships between the urinary microbiota and the human host in health and disease. Additional ongoing collaborative projects in the De Nisco Lab focus on examining interactions between uropathogens and the glycosaminoglycan layer, as well as developing new point-of-care diagnostics for UTI. Dr De Nisco completed her BSc in Biology and her PhD in Molecular Biology, both at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Sarita Mohapatra, MD, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India

Dr Sarita Mohapatra is an Additional Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. She has undergone training in Antimicrobial Research in Cleveland, OH, and La Jolla, CA, USA. Dr Mohapatra is renowned for her extensive work as a clinical microbiologist on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in urinary tract infections and sepsis patients in both healthcare and community settings. Additionally, she serves as a core member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee at her hospital. To her credit, she has more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Edmond Puca, MD, University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa,” Albania

Dr Edmond Puca is an Associate Professor at the University Hospital Center "Mother Teresa" in Tirana, Albania. He completed his doctoral studies at the same institution, earning his PhD in 2016. His research focuses on sepsis, infectious diseases, urinary tract infections, and tropical infectious diseases. Currently, his editorial passions include sepsis, urinary tract infections, and involving patients and the public in the research journey. He is enthusiastic about editing articles that contribute to precision and patient-centered medicine for improved clinical outcomes. Dr Puca joined BMC Infectious Diseases as an Editorial Board Member in early 2024 with a distinguished background in infectious diseases.

About the Collection

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections encountered in clinical practice, affecting hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide each year. In addition to being highly prevalent, UTIs present ongoing challenges due to their recurrent nature and the rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This Collection seeks to address these challenges by highlighting advancements in our understanding and management of UTIs.

We invite submissions that explore a wide array of topics within the scope of UTIs, including but not limited to:

  • Pathogenesis and microbiology: investigations into the molecular mechanisms of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Candida albicans, Enterococcus spp., and Staphylococcus aureus
  • Clinical manifestations and complications: research on various clinical presentations of UTIs, including acute cystitis, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and pyelonephritis
  • Diagnostic innovations: advances in urinalysis techniques and novel diagnostic biomarkers that improve the accuracy and speed of UTI diagnosis
  •  Treatment and resistance: insights into current and emerging therapies for UTIs (including antimicrobial treatments and their efficacy against resistant strains), and research on alternative therapeutic approaches (such as bacteriophage therapy, probiotics, and immunomodulatory treatments)
  • Epidemiology and prevention: studies examining the epidemiological trends of UTIs in various populations, risk factors for infection, and strategies for prevention

This Collection aims to provide a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals. By addressing the multifaceted nature of UTIs, we hope to contribute to the development of more effective strategies for their management and prevention. This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.
